28 'Best' Standalone 3D-render programma's


Inleiding

Naar een idee van onderstaande site, maar in deze vorm geheel nieuw van opzet, met de laatste gegevens van de renderprogramma's (meetdatum juli 2015):

De meest populaire 3D-programma's (bv. SketchUp Pro) hebben één of meerdere render plug-ins om in het 3D-programma zelf te renderen. Plug-ins zijn voor grote 3D-projecten niet altijd de juiste keuze, alhoewel de Upgrade met ondersteuning van SketchUp Pro van 32- naar 64-bit computers bij Windows wel meer geheugenruimte voor de plug-in overlaat om beter te kunnen functioneren. Apple computers waren al 64-bit uitvoering.

Bijgaand los te gebruiken 3D-rendering programma's. Belangrijk bij de opsomming en evaluatie van een render programma is de manier waarop het werkt. Welke computer hardware is nodig om minimaal* of optimaal met zo'n render programma aan de slag te kunnen.

* Fabrikanten van software zullen altijd in hun minimale systeem eisen de ondergrens opzoeken, waarop het optimaal en lekker werken niet zijn gewaarborgd bij deze minimale gegevens. Hou bij het lezen van minimale 'System Requirements' daar terdege rekening mee.

Actueel ?

De tijd loopt door, of te wel, alle hier gepresenteerde gegevens (aug. 2015) kunnen op enige latere datum geheel of gedeeltelijk zijn gewijzigd. Het versie nummer kan geUpgrade zijn, maar ook de belangrijke manier waarop ze werken (met welke hardware) kan uitgebreid zijn. Raadpleeg daarom altijd de actuele fabrikanten site voor de laatste gegevens en bekijk tevens het corresponderende Forum voor de reacties van eindgebruikers, maar ook van de mate waarin de fabrikant antwoord geeft.

Werkingswijze

• In deze lijst zijn render programma's opgenomen die met de processor (CPU) werken, dit is nog steeds de grootste groep. Meer cores en hogere kloksnelheid leveren kortere render doorlooptijden op.

• Daarnaast zijn er een groeiend aantal GPU georiënteerde programma's, waarbij onderscheid moet worden gemaakt in NVIDIA (gebaseerd op CUDA) en AMD Stream processor (gebaseerd op OpenCL).

• Dan zijn er nog enkele fabrikanten, die een mix van deze drie bieden. Een hybride programma biedt aanzienlijke voordelen voor de gebruiker: hij of zij krijgt een render programma dat zich als het ware aanpast aan de computer hardware die beschikbaar is. Daarbij wordt optimaal gebruik gemaakt van de rekenkracht die op dat moment ter beschikking staat.

Termen om het programma te positioneren

Termen die door veel render fabrikanten worden gebruikt, zoals 'Physically based', 'Photo-realistic based' en 'Real-Time'. Meer daarover in het afzonderlijke hoofdstuk.

Daarnaast lezen we 'Biased en Unbiased', hier geldt hetzelfde voor, het is moeilijk te bewijzen of te meten. Alleen de ontwerpers en daarna de verkoop plakt deze etiketten erop.

Dan kennen we de termen als : 'Real-Time, fastest, the first, easy to use, easy and production quality, physically right en quality rendering software'. U kunt de lijst zelf nalezen en aanvullen.

 


Vergelijkende test met één zelfde soort computer, met verschillende NVIDIA kaarten en met een render programma dat met NVIDIA CUDA cores werkt. Zo wordt al snel duidelijk wat de verschillen in tijd kunnen zijn met betere grafische kaarten.

Mental Ray systeem eisen zijn niet gemakkelijk te vinden. De kern is door NVIDIA ontwikkeld om met CUDA cores te werken. Daar vinden we niet veel van terug in de documentatie. De eindgebruiker kan zo geen goede indruk krijgen, of de aan te schaffen software voldoet voor zijn configuratie.

In 2002 the first V-Ray for 3ds Max was published and seven years later V-Ray RT. On 2011 the Chaos Group acquires ASGVIS V-Ray for Rhino and SketchUp Pro. Those two were added to the product portfolio.

The development pace is more or less dependent on the populairty of those 3D drawing programs. And so there is a difference in the design proces tempo. Most of the new releases are in first instance for 3ds Max, Maya and Blender. After a while the rest of the plug-in is developed and issued.

On August 11 2015 V-Ray for NUKE has been launced. With a new approach to lighting and compositing with integrated production quality for Nuke and NUKEX.

On July 28 2015 V-Ray 3.1 for Maya is made available with more then 100 new and modified features. With compatibility for Maya 2016. GPU enhancements and two new VR cameras.

On June 2015

3ds Mac was made available with fully compatible with 3ds Max 2016 adn mad VR-ready. Improved volume rendering, distributed rendering and Global Illumination.

With the use of Phoenix fluid dynamics (a grid based simulator for Max and Maya) one can see new fire, smoke, liquids, foam and splashes in the rendering output.

With the PDplayer is a professional image sequence player and viewer for the 3D industry, developed by Asynthic and distributed by Chaos Software Group.

The procedure to install the V-ray software for instance for SketchUp Pro is less simple then it looks like. Both on Windows and Mac OSX it is quite difficult to perform without a proper manual. There are several manuals on the internet from the Chaos Group, but they are not up to date. We find even Google 8 and Trimble SketchUp Pro 2014 screendumps. The idea is that a dongle gives you freedom of computer. But working with an USB dongle (with WIBU-KEY drivers) is not that high-tech anymore nowadays. And it only works with an old version of the Java software, that part of the program is not high-tech at all.

Omar Estevez wanted to help new V-Ray for SketchUp users learn basic V-Ray skills, so he created a series of tutorials that explain the complete rendering process from start to finish.

Helaas zonder enig nieuws over hoe het met de nieuwe V-Ray versie 3.0 voor SketchUp staat.

 

V-Ray voor SketchUp

December 2015 de nieuwe versie 3.0 wordt door Chaos Group aangekondigd. Waarbij wordt beloofd dat gebruikers van 2.x een gratis Upgrade kunnen verwachten. Ook zou de ouderwetse Dongle met de introductie worden vervangen door een veel gebruikelijker licentie server, zoals vrijwel elk software merk al lang gebruikt.

 

Augustus 2016:

Er is nog steeds geen groen licht als het gaat om de V-Ray for SketchUp render programma 3.0. Die overigens wat mogelijkheden betreft al weer jaren achterloopt ten opzichte van V-Ray voor 3ds Max, Maya en vele anderen. Of deze achterstand in de ontwikkeling te maken heeft met de USA (ASGVIS), waar de SketchUp plug-in van origine vandaan komt is niet bekend. Het hoofdkantoor van V-Ray ligt in Bulgarije en het is onduidelijk waar de ontwikkeling van V-Ray voor SketchUp nu eigenlijk wordt uitgevoerd. De frequentie is echter veel te laag in de concurrende SketchUp markt.

Corona renderer is new (un)biased photorealistic renderer, fully integrated into 3ds MAX, developed by Ondra Karlík since 2009.

Almost the whole team in the Prague office (some of the research guys are missing).

This was a solo student project of Ondra Karlik at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He estabilished a company together with the former CG artist Adam Hotovy and Jaroslav Kfivanek (associate professor). Despite the youg age the program has become a production-ready renderer capable of creating high-quality results. The download (sept 2015) counter is over the 80.000 times, but of course not all of them did the actual buy.

Price of license is 25 Euro / month for one floating workstation working as a render node. + 3. The 5 or 10 floating render nodes as an option resp. 30 and 45 Euro/month.

Perhaps many of you remember the first days when we were decided to go for a GPU engine. The question back in those days was whether someone would go with OpenCL or CUDA. Supporting all kind of hardware was quite important for us but we simply could not ignore that OpenCL was not that mature. CUDA has been our dearest friend deploying Presto first there but we always want to push Presto running on all available hardware (this is of course why our next stop was the CPU port). I can say already (after a few tests) that going with CUDA for NVidia produces faster results than going with OpenCL. Although, the OpenCL port is not as optimized yet, this is to be expected because OpenCL is one layer more abstract than CUDA (compilation goes through CUDA as far as I know).

It's exciting to know that when done we can compare Nvidia to AMD. Do you know yet if there will be a minimum AMD GPU we will need for it to work or will something old like a Radeon 8500 or 4770 work?

Breaking news: Bunkspeed has been acquired by Dassault Systèmes. From now on it will be part of SOLIDWORKS and the name will be changed into SOLIDWORDS Visualize.

The management of Bunkspeed tells that it will be an opportunity to streamline the product and focus efforts on mre concise and valuable solutions. Other CAD packages will be still supported.

Although after dec. 31 2015 no Bunkspeed software prior to 2014 will be supported anymore. Redshift is a biased renderer. Redshift uses approximation and interpolation techniques to achieve noise-free results with relatively few samples, making it much faster than unbiased rendering.

Out-of-Core Architecture
 
Redshift uses an out-of-core architecture for geometry and textures, allowing you to render massive scenes that would otherwise never fit in video memory.
 
A common problem with GPU renderers is that they are limited by the available VRAM on the video card &endash; that is they can only render scenes where the geometry and/or textures fit entirely in video memory. This poses a problem for rendering large scenes with many millions of polygons and gigabytes of textures.
 
With Redshift, you can render scenes with tens of millions of polygons and a virtually unlimited number of textures with off-the-shelf hardware.

 

Proxies and Instances
 
Redshift supports geometry instancing allowing you to render massive scenes with large numbers of repeating objects, like grass or trees, efficiently with almost no memory overhead.
 
Redshift also supports render proxies which allow you to place previously exported geometry in your scene but loading into memory only at render time when it is needed. With proxies, you can render scenes that would otherwise not even load in the host DCC application. Like regular geometry, Redshift proxies can be instanced, making rendering scenes with billions of instanced polygons possible.

 

1-Click Progressive Rendering

 

Redshift provides a progressive rendering mode that allows you to conveniently and interactively preview your scene without waiting for GI prepasses. This mode uses progressive refinement to give you draft quality results almost immediately while continuously refining the quality over time.

Redshift uses a flexible node-based shader system supporting complex shading networks. Er is een possitieve manier van vragen stellen en de beantwoording is prettig en positief te noemen. Dat is bij andere software wel eens anders.
 
Met name de Biased en de out of core rendering zijn belangrijke verschillen ten opzichte van de concurrenten. Waardoor het programma in een kortere tijd minder ruis kan produceren en waarbij grafische kaarten van NVIDIA CUDA compatibel 1 GB VRAM en hoger prachtig kunnen worden ingezet om zo snel als de kaart is te renderen.
Interessant is ook het feit dat de computer geheel actief blijft, ook tijdens het renderproces, omdat dat gedeelte door de grafische kaart wordt opgevangen. We denken aan 3D tekenen, terwijl de computer aan het renderen is, twee NVIDIA kaarten, een voor het scherm (goedkope) en een met veel CUDA cores (duurdere GPU kaart) lijkt dan voor de hand te liggen. Bij de biased global illumination is er een keuze uit vier modellen: GI, Photon Mapping, Irradiance cache en Point Cloud.
 
Ook de proxies en instances vragen aandacht, maar dat is in wezen voor GPU render programma's niet uitzonderlijk, wel ten opzichte van de CPU-render software. Probeer het zelf, maak met 3D software een object en kopieer dat een paar honderd keer en bekijk in welke fase het programma trager reageert. Bewaar het eerste 3D model met een object en probeer met een CPU render programma dat in grote aantallen te kopiëren om vervolgens te renderen.
Bij GPU render programma's kunnen gras, bomen en paaltjes om een landgoed heen prima en efficiënt worden verwerkt. Zelfs heel grote aantallen polygonen kunnen zo worden opgenomen. Voor landschapsarchitectuur een uitkomst, voor de interieur ontwerper nauwelijks van belang. Indien in de toekomst nog zou kunnen worden voldaan aan OpenCL support, dan kunnen ook de AMD GPU modellen goed ingezet worden voor zowel Windows als Mac (support van Mac platform werd ook aangekondigd als toekomstig perspectief).

From memory there has been previous mention of Dual hex core at least 3Ghz and 12GB RAM for a full monty system for 2k work

That is like a $3000 computer, I priced a few of those to compared with MacPro towers. General rule:
Lots of processor
Lots of high end graphics card in the family they suggest (nVidia Quadro)
Lots of RAM never hurts
Really fast hard drive for swap space
Really really fast drive array for media files
Intel chipset main board for best possible success since they probably develop for this chipset.
